Human Variation & Race

Image
Humanity is very shallow species from a genetic perspective, in that most variation in our species is only skin deep.  But this lack of genetic difference has granted us the ability to rapidly adapt to varying environmental conditions which has made it possible for us to survive in most regions of the world without to much discomforts.  Adaptability to specific environmental stresses like say from high levels of solar Radiation, varies from person to person and from population to population. So to increase success for the population and to avoid or prepare for future challenges and obstacles like say to avoid vitamin D deficiency that can cause the bone disease known as rickets from occurring due to lack of sunlight entering thru your skin, you could consume a diet rich in vitamins D to compensate, or move closer to the equator where Ultraviolet radiation is more present. These environmental stresses are the cause of what little variation we have thanks to our four forms of ad...

Language: A human art.

Part 1: talking to someone who is not allowed to use any version of a symbolic language (no speaking, writing, or ASL).  The experiment proved to be a difficult situation for both parties involved that much was certain. The real problem was that we didn't plan on what to talk about in the beginning of the conversation once we started, but I was able to steer it at the start. My partner for the conversation experiment was able to understand what exactly I wanted to talk about, although the entire process envoled a bunch of trials and errors. To explain, I wanted to begin a conversation exploring a specific component inside his phone, and the process to even get there involved my partner focusing and figuring out what I was getting across  based on what I was pointing at and the body gestures I gave. It was mostly my partner figuring what I was communicating by being patient and attempted. As a result of this, I was in control of the flow of the conversations topics. Althou...

Week 5: Piltdown Hoax

In February of 1912, an amateur British archaeologist named Charles Dawson committed one of the most infamous hoax in modern scientific history. Dawson would make write  to London's Natural History Museum claiming that he had found fossils that indicated a common ancestor between human and apes, and to the excitement of the the British society, it was found in Sussex, in a little village called Piltdown. Dawson would then be aided by Arthur Smith Woodward, an establish figure of the Natural History Museum, and Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a french paleontologist. The trio would find more "fossils" that gave evidence of early man living in England, and by 1915 a year before Dawson's death, they had been able to avoid the few skeptics they had with their "evidence" until 1953. With new innovation in fossil dating through fluoride measurements finally disproving the hoax, it also revealed the unfortunate truth that scientific focus, time, and resource w...

1.A) 2 different species that's share a homologous traits are ostriches and Flamingos.  Ostriches live in dry savannas with open plains, Which they travel through quickly using their long tarsus And tibia (legs). Flamingos live in tropical environment with Plenty of water, they feed from the plentiful organisms in the water that they can traverse through thanks to their long tarsus and tibia. 1.B)  The long and dense Tarsus and  Tibia of an ostrich is to help it travel quickly through the wide and open plains of it environment, where predators can spot you more easily than in more dense regions.   The flamingo however does not need to worry so much for predators and instead It's Tarsus  And tibia is focused in aiding in its pursuit of food, by being skinny and light it can move more elegant through the water without alerting the prey in the water.  1.C)  Both species most likely shared a common ancient bird ancestor. By looking at the skel...

Historical influences on Darwin

If we’re talking about who had the biggest impact on darwin’s development of his theory of evolution, one needs only look Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and his inheritance of acquired characteristics theory. Although the theory was ultimately dismissed in favor of Darwin’s theory of evolution, his theory was integral for it’s observation of the connection between organisms and the external environment in the evolutionary process. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck is known for his contribution to science as an evolutionary theorist. He was the first individual to attempt to explain the evolutionary process, and although his theory was disproved, his notion of the inheritance of acquired characteristics being influenced by the environment help give Scientist like Darwin the right direction to find their own theories.
