Historical influences on Darwin

  1. If we’re talking about who had the biggest impact on darwin’s development of his theory of evolution, one needs only look Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and his inheritance of acquired characteristics theory. Although the theory was ultimately dismissed in favor of Darwin’s theory of evolution, his theory was integral for it’s observation of the connection between organisms and the external environment in the evolutionary process.
  2. Jean-Baptiste Lamarck is known for his contribution to science as an evolutionary theorist. He was the first individual to attempt to explain the evolutionary process, and although his theory was disproved, his notion of the inheritance of acquired characteristics being influenced by the environment help give Scientist like Darwin the right direction to find their own theories. 3. “If the environment changes, the traits that are helpful or adaptive to that environment will be different.” Jean-Baptiste Lamarck’s Theory helped Lead to the creation to this point by showing the connection between environmental factors influencing the organisms that live in it. And although Lamarck’s theory was discarded in favor of Darwin’s, The fact remains that without its existence, Darwin would never think about the island environment being tied to the selection process of natural selection.
  4. No, although Darwin is an observant man and would likely have noticed and recorded the differences of the animals, he would just be following the same path his grandfather did. The actual idea of explaining the process was conceived in his lifetime, but he wasn’t the man to try and do that, just disprove it.
  5. It made him fear for his safety and livelihood. He would hold back the release of his findings till someone else was about to release their own version of his research.

  1. Your post has lost it's text-wrapping function and disappears off the page. This happens when you create your post in Google Docs and copy/paste it into Blogger systems. Don't ask me why... you'd thank two Google programs would be compatible. But you are responsible for making sure your post is legible after you post it.

For now, I will copy your post below so students can read it (and I can grade it). From now on, you need to check your post to make sure it published correctly.

  2. My feedback:

Yes, Lamarck is credited with being the first to attempt to present a possible mechanism for how evolution actually works. Good point. But this would have been a good opportunity to explain how that mechanism actually works. And how did Lamarck's mechanism differ from Darwin's? What did Lamarck get wrong that Darwin got right?

I agree that Lamarck recognized the importance of the environment on natural evolutionary processes, but there are more points here you can attribute to Lamarck, including the importance of inheritance and reproduction to evolution. Additionally, I would also have included the point that "individuals don't evolve. Populations do", not because this was Lamarck's point but because he argued the opposite. Darwin recognized the problem with Lamarck's logic and countered it, so this could be viewed as a negative, oppositional influence by Lamarck.

I agree that Darwin likely would have developed his mechanism without Lamarck... but then perhaps there was a different scientist in this group that had more impact on Darwin? Check other student posts regarding the other scientists to see if you might reconsider your choice of Lamarck.

"It made him fear for his safety and livelihood."

Perhaps not his safety, but I'll allow that it might have impacted his livelihood. That said, can you expand your explanation here? Darwin delayed publishing for more than 20 years so it is worthwhile to try to understand the reason for this extensive delay. What were Darwin's concerns? And was he only worried about himself or was he also worried about how his family might be impacted by publishing? Remember that his wife was very devout. How might she have been impacted if the church responded negatively to Darwin? Remember that scientists don't work in a vacuum. They can be influenced not just by academics but also by social, cultural and personal issues.
